Movies Under the Stars – Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before the opening credits roll

Do I need tickets?

No tickets needed – Movies Under the Stars events are free for the public to attend, thanks to your local councillor and community support.

You can simply turn up on the day.

If you’d like reminders and updates, you can:

  • Register via Eventbrite where available
  • Click Interested or Going on the Facebook event
  • Add the event to your calendar
What should I bring?
Bring whatever helps you get comfy for a movie under the stars — picnic rug, blanket, bean bag, cushion or low chair.
A warm layer is also a great idea once the sun goes down.

You’re welcome to bring snacks, a full picnic, and non-alcoholic drinks. In warmer months, mozzie repellent can also be a lifesaver.

If taller chairs are used, they may need to be placed toward the back so everyone can enjoy the view.

What time should I arrive?
Because these are outdoor screenings, the movie can only begin once the sun has gone down enough for the screen to shine.

That means event start times and movie start times can vary slightly depending on sunset and the time of year.

We recommend arriving early so you can:

  • Choose a great spot
  • Settle in comfortably
  • Enjoy a picnic, pre-movie activities, nearby food options, or just soak up the atmosphere

For the most accurate times, always check the individual event listing.

Is there reserved seating?

No – seating is first come, first served.

The good news? There are usually plenty of great places to settle in on the lawn. Arriving early gives you the best chance to pick the perfect viewing spot.

Can I bring food and drinks?

Yes – absolutely. A movie under the stars is even better with snacks.

Feel free to bring your own picnic, treats and non-alcoholic drinks. Some events may also have nearby food options or food trucks, depending on the location.

Please help us keep the venue beautiful by taking your rubbish with you or using the bins provided.

Can I bring alcohol?

No. Movies Under the Stars is an alcohol-free event.

Can I smoke or vape?

Movies Under the Stars is designed to be a relaxed, family-friendly community event, so the viewing area is smoke-free and vape-free.

If you do need to smoke or vape, please move well away from the event area and other patrons.

Can I bring the kids?

Absolutely. Movies Under the Stars is made for relaxed, family-friendly fun.

Most films are G or PG rated, but we always recommend checking the movie classification and theme to make sure it’s suitable for your child’s age and sensitivities.

Can I bring my dog?

In many cases, yes – we love a well-behaved four-legged movie buddy.

If you bring your dog, please make sure that:

  • Your dog is kept on a leash 2 metres or under at all times
  • Your dog remains under effective control
  • You clean up after your dog
  • You bring water and a drinking container for them
  • Your pup stays calm and doesn’t disturb other movie-goers

Please also check the specific event listing or local park rules, as some venues may have restrictions.

Where can I park?

Each event location has parking available nearby, although parking arrangements vary from venue to venue.

We recommend checking the individual event page for location-specific information and arriving early during busy events.

What if I arrive late?

No problem – you can still join the fun.

If you arrive after the movie has started, please enter quietly and be considerate of others by:

  • Avoiding walking directly in front of viewers where possible
  • Keeping noise to a minimum
  • Setting up quickly and carefully

Think of it as your gentle late entry scene.

Is the event accessible?

We aim to make Movies Under the Stars as welcoming as possible.

At most local park venues:

  • Accessible toilets are available
  • Accessible parking spaces are available nearby

Because our cinema setup is temporary and moves between locations, we do not currently offer an audio induction loop.

Subtitles may be available for some films, but not all. If this is important for your visit, feel free to contact us before the event and we’ll advise where possible.

Can I take photos at the event?

Of course – we love seeing your movie-night memories.

Feel free to snap and share your photos, and tag:

@spectrumoutdoorentertainment
#gcmoviesunderthestars

We may even repost your favourites.

Out of courtesy to others, please avoid:

  • Flash photography during the movie
  • Professional recording equipment
  • Filming or recording the movie itself
Are the parks closed off for the event?

No – these events are held in public outdoor spaces, so parks generally remain open.

That means you can arrive any time, but arriving earlier is always the best way to claim a great viewing spot and enjoy the atmosphere before the movie begins.

What happens if it rains?

As an outdoor cinema event, Movies Under the Stars is sometimes at the mercy of the weather.

We do our best to go ahead whenever possible and do not usually cancel for light rain, occasional showers, or uncertain forecasts.

A screening will only be cancelled or postponed if weather conditions become unsafe for patrons, crew or equipment – for example, heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, or dangerous storm activity.

If conditions change, updates will be posted on the relevant event page and/or social media.

Can I bring wet weather gear?

Yes – ponchos and raincoats are a great idea if the forecast looks uncertain.

Please note that umbrellas are not permitted during the movie, as they block the view of other guests.

What happens if I lose something?

If you realise you’ve lost something while still at the event, please speak with the onsite technician or event crew before leaving.

If you notice later, please contact us via the website with the event name, date, description of the item, and your contact details.

Any movie-night etiquette tips?

A few little things help make the experience great for everyone:

  • Keep taller chairs to the back
  • Avoid umbrellas during the screening
  • Keep noise low once the movie starts
  • Supervise children
  • Clean up after yourself
  • Be considerate when arriving late or leaving early
  • Keep dogs calm, leashed, and well managed

Basically: be the kind of audience member you’d want sitting next to you.
